We are excited to announce that Regional Samaúma is now offering a guided group practice Roda de Choro course in New York. This course is designed to teach musicians the choro playing style and promote the practice and repertoire of choro music while building a sense of community among musicians. The Roda de Choro is crucial for understanding choro as a musical genre and a living tradition with a rich history.
Our instructors, Fernanda Silveira (cavaquinho), Fabio Oliveira (percussion), and Vitor Sampaio (7-string guitar), will lead the Roda, which will take place at World Arts East, 115 W 29th St, Suite #1106, NYC, on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. starting on February 1st.
We will cover fundamental choro rhythms such as Polca, Lundu, Maxixe, Choro, Choro sambado, Choro canção, Scottish and Waltz. Participants will learn the nuances of roda de Choro playing, repertoire, the role of each instrument, and some Choro History.
Many will benefit from the course including Intermediate to advanced music students that are already familiar with some Choro Music, as well as more advanced classical and jazz musicians with no previous experience in the style, but who are interested in exploring this vast and rich musical practice.
This Season, we will offer three workshops with musicians who specialize in Choro and reside in New York. Our featured guests for this edition are clarinetist Anat Cohen, accordionist Vitor Gonçalves, and pianist Henrique Eisenmann. The workshops will take place on three Saturdays, each led by one of the invited musicians. Only students enrolled in all 13 classes will be eligible to participate in the workshops without an additional fee.
