Guided Roda de Choro

Registrations are now open for the new 9-week Guided Roda de Choro session, which will run in May and June 2025. Use the link above to complete your registration.

Regional Samaúma members are the instructors: Fernanda Silveira (cavaquinho), Fabio Oliveira (pandeiro), and Vitor Sampaio (7-string guitar), and lead the Roda which takes place at World Arts East in Manhattan, 115 W 29th St, Suite #1106, NYC, on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. starting on May 3rd.

We will cover fundamental choro rhythms such as Polca, Lundu, Maxixe, Choro, Choro sambado, Choro canção, Scottish and Waltz. Participants will learn the nuances of roda de Choro playing, repertoire, the role of each instrument, and some Choro History.

In this session, we will continue to offer masterclasses with musicians who specialize in Choro and reside in New York. The masterclasses will occur on Saturdays, each led by one of the invited musicians. Only students enrolled in all nine classes will be eligible to participate in the masterclasses without an additional fee.

Harmony playing instrumentalists should be familiar with comping and chord reading. Melody playing instrumentalists need to be fluent reading musical notation.
